Ever since I got a new computer, I've been going mad having problems importing video files into iTunes. About 50% of the time I try to import a video file into iTunes, nothing happens. If I try to open this "bad file" in Quicktime, I get a ""Error - 2002: a bad public movie atom" message in a popup box.
The crazy thing is this file works fine on any other operating system besides Vista.
I've searched all over the web and I've not been able to find a definitive solution to this problem. From what I can gather, it has something to do with some sort of interaction between Vista, Quicktime, and iTunes and how the three of them deal with the ID3 tags in the mp4 file. I was on the verge of just boxing up my computer and sending it back from whence it came until I stumbled upon this hack.
So here's a workaround that seems to be working for me. If you're having this same problem and this works for you, please leave a comment so I'll know that I've really solved the generic problem and not just some strange situation on my computer.
Step 1: Grab the Tagger software (and make sure you have a current JRE installed)
Step 2: After unzipping/untarring the software, double-click on the executable JAR file "tagger.jar"
Step 3: Use the "File | Open" menu option to open the MP4 you are having trouble importing into iTunes.
Step 4: Edit one or more of the tags using the Tagger software and click SAVE.
Step 5: After Tagger finishes writing the new file with the new tags, add the file to iTunes like you normally would.

Changing the tags doesn't seem to help me.. I've changed the title and all there is to change in the tag area and still it won't find its way into Itunes. WHATS'S THE FREAKIN' PROBLEM!? Does someone know what I'm talking about or am I just stupid?
This may not work for everyone, but it's much simpler and requires no downloading of new programs. After receiving the same error message I went through different players other than Quicktime. When "Windows Media Player" did not accept the movie files either I tried "Media Player Classic" and they all played.
An even better solution. Stop iTunes!
Quicktime is flawed in design and is intended to be. Use superior playback software such as VLC or mPlayer. Open versions of the Quicktime codecs are available for ALL OSs.

This isn't JUST a Vista problem. I tried to open a 1.5GB MP4 movie in QuickTime with Windows XP and got the same error, causing the movie to not play at all. It was an Acer One netbook, FYI.

I so confused Ive been searching for answers eevrywhere.. NOTHING will play the video..Videora wont work and i cant find the tagger link..This is a really important video does it have anything to do with the file size because the video is 25 minutes long

I edited the tags, and saved it, but when I try to import the file into iTunes, nothing happens AGAIN. Is the "saved" file a new file altogether? Or is it simply an edited version of the original?

dudes, i just changed the name and saved it and it displayed "saving finished". but when i tried to play it from quicktime, the same Error 2002! HELP!

Guys, (today is July 9th 2016). Just want to let you know TaggerJava6 didn't work for me. However, I do have a software called "Mp3Tag" on my computer. So I said why not and gave it a try. Guess what, once open my MP4 file in Mp3Tag, i left-click and said "remove tag". And my file worked!! Hopefully this solution can help other users. I've been wasting my days looking for a simple solution like this. Hope this can save time for others!!
