HOWTO: Fix the "Error - 2002: a bad public movie atom was found in the movie" problem with mp4 video in iTunes / Quicktime on Vista

Ever since I got a new computer, I've been going mad having problems importing video files into iTunes. About 50% of the time I try to import a video file into iTunes, nothing happens. If I try to open this "bad file" in Quicktime, I get a ""Error - 2002: a bad public movie atom" message in a popup box.

The crazy thing is this file works fine on any other operating system besides Vista.

I've searched all over the web and I've not been able to find a definitive solution to this problem. From what I can gather, it has something to do with some sort of interaction between Vista, Quicktime, and iTunes and how the three of them deal with the ID3 tags in the mp4 file. I was on the verge of just boxing up my computer and sending it back from whence it came until I stumbled upon this hack.

So here's a workaround that seems to be working for me. If you're having this same problem and this works for you, please leave a comment so I'll know that I've really solved the generic problem and not just some strange situation on my computer.

Step 1: Grab the Tagger software (and make sure you have a current JRE installed)

Step 2: After unzipping/untarring the software, double-click on the executable JAR file "tagger.jar"

Step 3: Use the "File | Open" menu option to open the MP4 you are having trouble importing into iTunes.

Step 4: Edit one or more of the tags using the Tagger software and click SAVE.

Step 5: After Tagger finishes writing the new file with the new tags, add the file to iTunes like you normally would.

I hope this works for you like it did for me. Let me know...

You are the best! This has been driving me nuts. You are the ONLY one on the internet with the solution . Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!

I found an alternate (possibly more time consuming) way. I'm running Vista. I wrote the bad atom files to a DVD+R as a file CD. I tried to open them in a Mac, no dice. Same with a XP ran computer. Still no go. So I put the disc back into my computer. I could read'play the files off the cd. So I imported the MPEG-4's from the CD. Then took out the cd. Then I tried to open then from the thumbnails in itunes. It prompts you to find the source files because the cd is gone. Make sure the files are on your hard drive. Connect the files to the ones on your computer. It should work. It was a little buggy. I had to restart my computer after I connected one. But they movies are on my iPod... try it out. It may or may not work, I have had no time to really test this out any further. But I had five of them and they all work now.

Anonymous said...

I don't even know where to start! This helped me so much, and I can't thank you enough! You're the greatest!
Forever your Norwegian friend.

To anyone who's having problems with this message:

"Could not find main class. Program will exit."

Try getting the older version of Tagger (for Java 5, I believe, instead of 6). That worked for me; I'm running Windows XP 2000, I believe.

Also, if people can't access Tagger through Winrar, try 7-Zip. It's free, and does both .zips and .rars.

(Almost done.) To someone who asked something I was wondering earlier, the tags are simply the pieces of information for the video (genre, artist, etc).

Finally, a big thanks to Jarrett for figuring this out! I just tried it and it worked perfectly, thank you so much!

Anonymous said...

The alternate method also works. You don't have to keep the mp4 file on the hard drive, just load it onto your ipod through i tunes, using the data dvd as the source file.

Anonymous said...

i have tried and tried to download tagger 6 and i get nothing. no program on my computer by that name, nothing. i did a search for the tagger.jar and i get nothing. can someone tell me why i'm not getting anything when i go to the page and download tagger 6? i also received a message saying it was not a valid windows program? help, please.

Anonymous said...

this is fabulous! thank you so much!!! I've been searching forever and noone seemed to be able to offer a solution beyond zipping the file and trying again! I hope that someone who can make the edits to the program stumbles across this blog too!
Thanks again!

Jarrett said...

For those having trouble opening the "jar" file, my GUESS is that you have a path problem with the installation of your JRE. Unfortunately, I'm not a Java hack so I really don't know where to start to help you guys out.

Anonymous said...

Great - works fine, many thanks.

Some help if like me you aren't familiar with any of this stuff.

1. Make sure you download & install Java (as above)
2. Make sure you download & install some free software to "unzip" a .rar file - there seems to be plenty available on the net.
3. Download the tagger .rar file (as above)
4. "Unzip" the .rar file.
5. the unzipped version has a folder with some files. Execute the .jar file.
6. Open your mp4 video file from teh tagger software as above.
7. Change a tag (I just changed the title slightly to make it different)
8. Save
9. hey presto .. job done

Cheers

Rich

I can't get the tagger.jar file to execute. I click on it and it opens a file (sub-directory) containing META-INF and tagger. clicking either of those takes me to more files. where am I going wrong?

I've tried 7-zip and WinAce to unzip.

Thanks for the help.

Jarrett said...

I THINK those of you having the problem that Seth is having (the file opening up into subdirectories) must have an extension association in windows that associates .jar files with your archiver program.

Since a .jar file is an archived java program, programs like WinZip etc. can be used to explode them. But what you want is the .jar to be executed by Java. Basically "java.exe Tagger.jar" command line.

Try associating .jar with Java instead of your archiver.

Looking at the older comments, it seems that all the ones that did work ran off some sort of XP.

Also, tagger isn't opening and I don't know how to associate it with Java. Could someone please reply?

I can not seem to download tagger.jar, nor does the mp4 fix work for me either. When I try to use the mp4 patch, a box appears saying no mp4 box, any other ideas? I too am attempting to use vista, quicktime and itunes. At some point a few days ago I was able to download my movies into itunes and then onto my ipod, then one day the error 2002 came up and since no go. Any other suggestions? And please keep them simple.

Thank you so much man, this will save tons of time wasted on re-attempts with my videora converter! I'm about to register on the Red Kawa forums now since I see nobody since JULY has taken the time to say "wow, this fix actually works!" regarding your post. Such a shame that you go to this trouble and once their issue is fixed, they can't simply hop on to say "Yep, it worked!" Oh well, I will. Kudos!

Anonymous said...

Ok, the original solution was too complicated for me (!) and I haven't tried the burning DVD one but I downloaded the patch (link not too far above) and that worked a treat. Many thanks

For fix errors, try-rar fixer, able it allows you to recover information from corrupt archives and corrupt rar files stored on removable media or on remote computers (tool can fix rar file via the local area network), can extract information even from those compressed files that are protected with a password.

HELP! When I use the tagger, it doesn't save any of my changes - when I click on save nothing happens and if I open the same file again using Tagger all the changes I made before were never saved. I am using windows VISTA.

Anonymous said...

NOOO!!!! It doesn't work! I barely have any tags already when the file opens in Tagger. So I edit the only tag to 3 letters and it STILL doesn't show up in iTunes. (I don't think it's saving properly...)

Anonymous said...

Thank you! I did not get the "Error - 2002...", but my 1 Click movies kept on stopping every couple of minutes on my itouch. Adding a tag solved the Windows Vista - itunes problem. Thanks again.

Anonymous said...

What do you open a JAR file w/? No application assoc on my computer.

Anonymous said...

Oh man, I wish I'd come here first. I tried uninstalls and reinstalls generally making a mess of my windows environment trying to get the stupid file(s) to play. *This* worked ... and it's so ridiculous.

One other problem I've noticed is, once the file plays again, it plays REALLY cHoPpY. I read elsewhere that if you have an external hard drive and play the file from it rather than the drive on which Vista is installed, the file will play perfectly. I've confirmed this to be true. Again, ridiculous.

My love/hate relationship with Vista continues ...

Thank you so very much for this post. A real lifesaver. ;o]

Anonymous said...

I downloaded The Tagger Program but when i play the tagger.jar it loads then an error comes up saying it could not find the main class.

As has been stated already, nice job. However I have a new spin on the whole problem. I used Tagger as described, and now the files are recognised by and play in iTunes. Great! However, for some reason they will not sync to my iPod (80gb 5.5G). I get an error message that says the video format is not supported, yet the file is properly set up as mp4. Anyone else having a similar issue? Any ideas? Help!

Thanks

-Mike

Anonymous said...

If Tagger doesn't come up or you get an error you haven't unzipped the file yet and if you're sure you have just go up a level than back into the file and it should work

Anonymous said...

Thank you so much for your advice!

ytiyityiyit said...

After the tagger finishes doin its thing, where does the updated video go? Because tryin to open the old video/import into itunes still wont work.

Anonymous said...

It works but can you tell me how all of the suddent more all my files randomly give this error messages? I watched them a week before and they were fine but all of teh sudden I get the -2002 Bad Public Movie Atom. I haven't transfered them back and forth and it seems like the problem is spreadin to all the MP4s randomly?

Anonymous said...

I tried all of the above and nothing worked for me. I then downloaded jodix video converter as suggested in another forum, converted the file and for some reasons that did it.

Anonymous said...

Hy Jarret, I work on a HP (XP) laptop and just wanted to upload movies via I-tunes to my recently bought Apple TV. All the files i have aren't in the .mov extension. I use a program which i found online to convert a movie to Apple TV HD format. If you convert a little piece it works fine. It syncs to the Apple TV and looks great on my LCD TV. But after converting the whole file (approx. 500MB) it gives the same error in Quicktime and gives you nothing when adding it to I-tunes. The solution you gave out probably only works for Vista machines. Do you have anything usefull for me? Either in fixen de atom bug or converting in a better way to make it compatible with I-tunes.

Regards,
Joshua

Hello, it works!!!! Thank you very much i was going crazy... By the way the only thing you need to do is change the "NAME" tag (when you open the mp4 file with tagger)... i changed everything else and doesn't worked, but the important thing is to change the "name" tag.

Thank you again!

Julian Ruiz said...

by the way, i use windows XP, so it's not only a problem with VISTA. i think it's videora online convertion that has some kind of verification, and if the file is (or videora thinks it is) a public video or movie, then it blocks the file...

Just need to open it with tagger and change the "name" tag to anything...

Thanks again

Anonymous said...

Thanks for this. The issue is actually caused by a technical difference between XP and Vista's character encoding. Vista is very much Unicode aware - XP is not. Apple haven't fixed iTunes and Quicktime like the failures they are.

Sadly it did not work at all for me. Editing any of the tags didn't stop the error codes from popping up.

I was only trying to get my mp4s on my ipod and I noticed the problem was due to Quicktime and iTunes, so I downloaded a different program for ipod hacks called Floola and it worked perfectly to add my mp4s.

Anonymous said...

sigh* tagger doesn't work for me... when i changed the name tag it doesn't work either... by the way is it safe to download that ipod hacker??? dont want to get a virus

Anonymous said...

It doesn't work for me, none of the solutions (tagger, patch...) :( BTW, I'm working with Windows XP, so it's not only about Vista. I didn't have this problem until I installed the lastest version of iTunes+Quicktime. This sucks, but thank you for trying.

Anonymous said...

Okay, today I tried re-converting the mp4 file and it worked. With that I mean, I used Videora (again) to convert my "corrupted" .mp4 file into a new .mp4, and this time it added the file automatically to my iTunes library with no problem. Hope it helps for those whom, like me, couldn't find any other solution.

Unknown said...

Looks like it's not a Vista-iTunes-QuickTime problem...
I'm having exactly the same problems and I'm running Mac OS X 10.5.2 :(

Anonymous said...

Holy crap!

You totally saved my life and frustrations from getting that error popup!

Thank you SO MUCH.

gcappa said...

I edited the title of the mp4 in the tagger, and resaved, i'm using latest quicktime and itunes 8, still doesn't work.

Anonymous said...

This is what worked for me under XP: In Videora under the Video File tab set the Device to "iPhone_2G" and the Profile will default to "H.264 480x320...". This profile caused the error. Change the Profile to "MPEG4 480x320..." then run your conversion.

Anonymous said...

If when you double click the tagger.jar icon I get: "could not find the main class. program will exit". I don't exactly know what it means, but to fix it, follow these steps, for Vista.
1. Download Java 6, NOT Java 5, no matter what people say.
2. Download the tagger software.
if you click tagger.jar, you should get the error message.
3. Extract all the files.
4. Go to the extracted folder and run tagger again.
This time it should work.
Hope it helps!

In case anyone's experiencing this with Videora 4.0.6 on Vista 64 bit, there's a DLL you need to replace as below. Note you need to put it in Program Files (x86), not Program Files. Not too sure why they haven't fixed this if they've been aware of it since 2007...

Can you try this:

Download MediaInfo_0.7.5.2_DLL_Windows_x64.zip (http://downloads.sourceforge.net/mediainfo/MediaInfo_0.7.5.2_DLL_Windows_x64.zip?modtime=1187 318335&big_mirror=0) from here:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=86862&package_id=90614

Extract the Zip
Copy MediaInfo.dll to C:\Program Files\Red Kawa\Video Converter 3\Tools\VideoInfo

And then try the converter again?

That has just saved me untold amounts of headaches! Thank you so much

nothing i've tried works(tagger, mp4patch):i'm using xp sp3, latest qt - so i gave up. NOTE: these files play fine on wd hd tv and in vlc and probably lots of other hardware/software. the problem is in quicktime and iTunes. When Apple decides to fix this it will be fixed, until then, try the patch - if it works, great, if not, wait till Apple recognizes the problem and deals with it.

When I try to download tagger it says, "The Site you have requested could not be found (404)"

Brett's solution is the one which worked for me.

If you can't get the Tagger software (because of 404 not found) then this is the next best thing if your using Videora...

Scroll up the comments bit on this blog and look for Brett - his solution found on the Red Kawa website is the one that works!!

Thanks Brett.

I think one thing that confuses people is that there is a difference between .jar and .rar. That's where I got it wrong anyway.

You have to unzip the .rar first and then open the .jar with Java. I hope that helps.

It still doesn't work for me though! :(

thx, your post provided the clue to solve the problem for the error 2002 in windows xp, it was a lot easier once I found out it had something to do with video.

Yeah, well I don't have vista and i still get that error. I'm hoping this works because I'm about to go crazy. lol

Casey =[ said...

yeah it didn't work because apparently the tagger thing is vista only? this is really annoying.

I opened Tagger, but when I went to open the Mp4 file that needed fixing, I couldn't open Mp4 files! Tagger would only allow me to open Mp3's, mpa's, or tag. What do I do?Help!
